Wiccan Myths

Wiccans are often misunderstood and misrepresented. Over the years they have become the target of many different myths and misrepresentations. Often as a result of media and Hollywood stigmas. Here are 3 of the most common myths cleared up for you.

Wiccans Worship the Devil

One of the most upsetting myths about Wicca is the thought that Wiccans worship the Devil. This is untrue. In Wicca, the Christian concept of the devil doesn’t even exist. Satan is tied to exclusively Christian theology; however, the wiccan pentacle (point up) and the satanic star (point down) are very similar, and this does not help when it comes to insisting that in Wicca, the devil just doesn’t exist. Wicca being a polytheistic religion emphasizing harmony, balance, and connection to the earth around us does include the worship of a God and Goddess, but they represent the different seasons, and life cycles involved in creation, not evil or malice. This myth stems from deliberate misrepresentations.  By making wiccans evil it was easy to fuel fear and prejudice.

Myth 2: Witches Use Black Magic to Harm Others

This stereotypy has been sustained through folklore, fairytales and other popular culture references that portray witches as evil. This is a common myth insinuating that wiccans use dark magic in order to manipulate situations to their advantage. In truth, the idea of inflicting harm goes completely against the founding principles of wicca. Any harm to others goes against the Wiccan Rede and is actively discouraged.

All Wiccans are Women

When we think of a wiccan or let’s just say a “witch” what automatically comes to mind is a woman in a black dress, a black pointy hat, riding around town on a broom.  The image of a wiccan is almost always presented as female and while there are many female wiccans, male wiccans also exist.  Wicca is a very inclusive religion, both men and women are welcome and both men and women practice. It makes sense since Wicca is also all about balance and it wouldn’t be very balanced if the religion was filled with women only!
