Herbs are believed to have unique properties and elements which can enhance things like spells, personal well-being and rituals. Listed below are some herbs commonly used by wiccans, their uses and how to use them in your own practice.

Understanding How Herbs are Used in Wicca


Herbs have been used in Pagan faiths including wicca for a very long time. In Wicca they have different uses and purposes:


  • Ritual Use: Herbs can be burned as incense, added to potions, or used when casting spells to achieve specific outcomes.

  • Healing: Herbs are known to have specific medicinal properties that can be used to enhance both mental and physical health.

  • Symbolism: A symbol is given to each herb associating it with different outcomes in order to enhance spells/rituals.


Understanding the properties of different herbs allows wiccans to choose the right ones for their current needs.


Common Herbs Used by Wiccans


1. Sage

Properties: cleansing, protection, clarity, healing


Sage is probably one of the most common herbs used by wiccans. It is burned to cleanse spaces and remove negative energies and is even burned as incense. Additionally, sage is associated with clarity of mind and is often used in rituals when seeking answers or guidance.


How to Use:

  • Burn dried sage to cleanse your space in a heat proof container or shell

  • Use sage for purification by bathing in the smoke before a ritual.


2. Lavender

Properties: protection, calming, love


Lavender is widely known for its calming properties. As a result wiccans often use this herb when they want to promote peace or relaxation. Lavender can also be used to help with sleep issues brought on by anxiety and create a peaceful atmosphere.


How to Use:

  • Love spells use dried Lavender by adding it to a sachet.

  • Lavender oil can be placed on the temples to increase relaxation for meditation purposes.


3. Rosemary

Properties: Memory/clarity of mind, protection/banishing negative energies, purification/cleansing/healing


Rosemary has many different and varied uses, but is most often associated with clearing ones mind to remember and to protect oneself from negative entities. It can be used in rituals for cleansing ones space, and opening up and clearing your mind so is perfect when you are studying for final exams and making big decisions.


How to Use:

  • During study sessions burn as incense to clear your mind.

  • Place rosemary sprigs at entrances to your home to banish negative energies away.


4. Mugwort

Properties: Spiritual growth, dream work/intuition/divination, healing


Mugwort is mostly known for helping us to interpret dreams and for guiding our intuition. You can use it to make dream pillows in order to make your dreams more clear when you wake up and also to promote lucid dreaming.


How to Use:

  • In order to encourage vivid dreams place dried mugwort under your pillow at night while you sleep.

  • To help with guiding your intuition, brew a tea with mugwort and open up your ability to see beyond our realm.


5. Chamomile

Chamomile is a gentle herb known for its calming effects. It is often used in spells for love and harmony, making it a popular choice for those seeking to enhance relationships.


How to Use:

  • Can be used in spells attracting abundance and wealth a common example would be in money spells.
